What is the RUT Tax Deduction?
The RUT tax deduction (RUT-avdrag) is a Swedish government program that lets you deduct 50% of the labor cost for household services like cleaning, directly on your invoice. This means you only pay half the price for professional cleaning services.
Who Can Use the RUT Deduction?
You qualify for the RUT deduction if you:
- Are registered for Swedish tax (folkbokförd) in Sweden
- Have a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer)
- Pay Swedish income tax
- Are at least 18 years old
Good news for expats: You do NOT need to be a Swedish citizen. As long as you are registered as a resident and pay taxes in Sweden, you are eligible – even with a coordination number (samordningsnummer) in some cases.
How Much Can You Save?
The RUT deduction covers 50% of the labor cost, up to a maximum of 75,000 SEK per person per year. Here is what that means in practice:
- Home cleaning: From 139 SEK/h after RUT (regular price 278 SEK/h)
- Deep cleaning: 50% off the total labor cost
- Move-out cleaning: 50% off – perfect when changing apartments
- Window cleaning: 50% off for residential properties
Which Cleaning Services Qualify?
The following household services are eligible for RUT tax deduction:
- ✅ Regular home cleaning (hemstädning)
- ✅ Deep cleaning (storstädning)
- ✅ Move-out cleaning (flyttstädning)
- ✅ Window cleaning (fönsterputs) for residential homes
- ✅ Open house cleaning before selling your home
- ❌ Airbnb/commercial cleaning (does not qualify)
- ❌ Office or business premises cleaning
How Does It Work in Practice?
- Book your cleaning – Contact JSG Städservice and provide your personnummer
- We clean your home – Professional cleaning to your specification
- Pay only half – We apply the RUT deduction directly on your invoice
- Skatteverket handles the rest – The Swedish Tax Agency processes the deduction automatically
You do not need to fill out any forms or apply separately. We handle everything through Skatteverket’s system.
Common Questions from Expats
I just moved to Sweden. Can I use RUT right away?
Yes, as soon as you have your personnummer and are registered for tax in Sweden, you can use the RUT deduction. There is no waiting period.
I have a coordination number, not a personnummer. Can I still use RUT?
In most cases, yes – if you are tax-registered in Sweden and have taxable income. Contact Skatteverket to confirm your eligibility.
What if I leave Sweden during the year?
The RUT deduction applies to services performed while you are registered as a Swedish tax resident. If you de-register, you can still claim RUT for services performed before that date.
Can both me and my partner use RUT?
Yes! Each person in the household can deduct up to 75,000 SEK per year. For a couple, that is 150,000 SEK total per year.
Does RUT apply to cleaning supplies and materials?
No, the RUT deduction only covers the labor cost. However, at JSG Städservice, we bring our own eco-friendly cleaning supplies at no extra charge.
