Carbonic acid is a chemical compound containing salts called carbonates, with the bicarbonate being one of the sodium salts of carbonic acid.
The bicarbonate consists of sodium bicarbonate only, while baking soda contains sodium bicarbonate, acid phosphates and starch.
When it comes to baking, baking powder is usually the better option as the bicarbonate of soda is only suitable if the pastry or bread contains some acidic product, such as skimmed milk or lemon. For cleaning, however, bicarbonate is better as it is more effective and a cleaner product.

To remove bad odors from the refrigerator, first empty it of food. Mix a few tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with water and wipe out the fridge with a cloth. Put back the foods and a bowl of bicarbonate to prevent bad odors.
To prevent bad odors in the drains before your holiday, pour some bicarbonate of soda into the drains before you leave. When you get home, just flush the drains with water.
Bad smell on clothes?
Replace fabric softener with bicarbonate of soda - 1 dl in the compartment gives a soft wash. Bicarbonate can also be used for stains by rubbing with a damp cloth dipped in the powder. Rinse off the bicarbonate and wipe off the powder residue. Test on the inside or in a corner for delicate garments.
